Born on October 17, 1955 in Pune. His father is Shivajirao Patil, a pioneer leader in the cooperative sector and former minister, and his mother is Vidyatai, a social activist. The Patil family hails from Shirpur in Dhule district.
All the family including Smita were active in the cultural activities of Rashtra Seva Dal. She studied from Renuka Swaroop Memorial Secondary School (Bhave School for Girls) in Pune.

Smita Patil initially worked as a news reporter for Mumbai Doordarshan, after which she trained in acting from the ‘Film and Television Institute’ in Pune.
Apart from acting, she was an active feminist and an active member of Mahila Kendra in Mumbai.

Recognizing the acting qualities of Smita Patil, who had penetrating and eloquent eyes, famous artistic filmmaker director Shyam Benegal gave her an opportunity to act in the Hindi films Nishant (1975) and Charandas Chor (1975). )
and Bhumika (1977), based on the biography of well-known Marathi actress Hansa Wadkar, impressed the audience with their roles.
Parallel to the artistic cinema trend of the seventies, realistic roles were portrayed in the cinema and the realistic acting style was popularized by cinematographers around the world.
While acting in parallel artistic cinema, he also acted in some commercial films with legendary actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna. He also acted in Satyajit Ray’s TV movie Sadgati. Many legendary directors and producers like J Omprakash, Prakash Mehra, Ramesh Sippy, Muzaffar Ali, Govind Nihalani, Ketan Mehta chose her as the heroine for their films.
Smita Patil, who was sensitive in acting, consciously associated herself with social movements, using the experiences she got as a platform to portray her roles. She also cultivated a hobby of photography. Along with Hindi films, he also acted in regional language films. Along with Hindi, he also acted in Marathi, Bengali and Gujarati languages. Jait Re Jait, Umbaratha in Marathi were very popular.

In his acting career, he received National Awards for his roles in the films Bhumika, Chakra. He also won the Filmfare Award for his role in Chakra.
In the year 1985, the Government of India honored him with the ‘Padma Shri’ title. “Smita, Smit Aur Me” written by Lalita Tamhane has become a popular book.
This actress, who made an important contribution to the film industry, was married to the famous actor Raj Babbar. Time caught up with her during her first delivery and she died on December 13, 1986 at the age of 31. His son Prateek Babbar is a budding actor.
