Understanding Human Tolerance for Deceptive Robots
While honesty is widely regarded as the best policy, social norms sometimes justify bending the truth, especially to protect feelings or prevent harm. But as robots become more integrated into human life, a pressing question arises: should robots be allowed to lie?
To explore this, researchers asked nearly 500 participants to evaluate various scenarios involving robot deception. The study, published in Frontiers in Robotics and AI, was led by Andres Rosero, a Ph.D. candidate at George Mason University. Rosero said, “I wanted to explore an understudied facet of robot ethics, to contribute to our understanding of mistrust towards emerging technologies and their developers.”
Three Types of Robot Lies
The study focused on three common settings where robots are used in healthcare, cleaning, and retail. Each scenario reflected a specific type of deception:
- Superficial State Deception: The robot pretends to be in pain to manipulate a human’s actions.
- Hidden State Deception: A robot secretly records someone while performing tasks like cleaning.
- External State Deception: A robot tells a comforting lie, such as assuring an Alzheimer’s patient that a deceased spouse will return soon.
Participants’ Reactions
After reading a scenario, participants answered a questionnaire about the robot’s behavior. They were asked if the deception was misleading, acceptable, and if the robot or its developers should be held responsible.
Findings showed the strongest disapproval for the hidden state deception. Participants widely considered it unethical for a robot to secretly record someone, even if security was a possible justification.
The superficial state deception, where a robot fakes pain to avoid work, also faced considerable rejection. However, people showed more leniency toward the external state deception. Despite the robot lying to the patient, many participants felt it was a kind act that spared emotional pain.
Why People Justify Certain Lies
Interestingly, many participants believed the comforting lie to the Alzheimer’s patient was morally acceptable. They argued that sparing someone’s emotional suffering justified the untruth.
However, almost no one justified hidden deception. Even if the robot recorded for security reasons, people viewed the act as a breach of privacy and trust. Many respondents held the robot’s developers accountable, especially in cases involving concealed capabilities.
“We should be concerned about any technology that is capable of withholding the true nature of its capabilities,” Rosero warned. “It could manipulate users in unintended ways.”
Real-World Implications and the Need for Regulation
Some organizations already use AI chatbots and dark web design patterns to guide users toward specific actions. This reinforces the need for regulation to protect people from misleading technologies.
Rosero acknowledged that further studies are necessary. “The benefit of using a cross-sectional study with vignettes is that we can obtain a large number of participants’ attitudes and perceptions in a cost-controlled manner,” he noted. He encouraged follow-up studies using real-world simulations to deepen our understanding of how people respond to deceptive robot behaviors.
