Launching a Responsible AI Roadmap

Launching a Responsible AI Roadmap for the Telecoms Industry

Discover how the GSMA’s Responsible AI roadmap is transforming telecoms. Backed by 19 major MNOs, this framework sets a global ethical AI standard.

The GSMA, which represents global mobile network operators (MNOs), has launched a pioneering Responsible AI (RAI) Maturity Roadmap tailored to the telecom sector. Nineteen major MNOs, including BT Group, Vodafone, Telefónica, Orange, Singtel, and Deutsche Telekom, support the initiative. Created with McKinsey, the roadmap aligns with ethical standards from institutions like the OECD and UNESCO.

McKinsey predicts that AI in telecoms could unlock up to $680 billion in value over the next 15 to 20 years. To ensure ethical integration, the GSMA provides a roadmap that allows telecoms to assess their AI maturity, identify improvement areas, and implement sound governance.

The roadmap includes five key pillars aimed at fostering responsible AI adoption.

Strategic Pillars for AI Ethics in Telecom

  1. Vision, Values, and Strategic Goals: Align AI initiatives with corporate missions and ethics.
  2. Operating Model: Integrate AI governance into telecom organisational structures.
  3. Technical Controls: Ensure AI solutions comply with legal and ethical requirements.

Collaboration and Change Management

  1. Stakeholder Collaboration: Maintain ethical relationships with partners, regulators, and suppliers.
  2. Corporate Transformation Management: Encourage transparency and drive cultural change to support ethical AI.

Each pillar offers guidelines, KPIs, and best practices, enabling telecoms to meet global compliance standards.

Embedding Global Ethical Norms

The framework includes ethical principles from global institutions such as fairness, data privacy, transparency, security, human oversight, and sustainability. This ensures alignment with international regulations and societal expectations.

Beyond compliance, the roadmap promotes a responsible internal culture. It includes:

  • Creating clear ethical AI usage policies
  • Training teams across departments
  • Providing transparency in AI implementations

These efforts help embed responsible AI as a core organisational value, not just a formal requirement.

Mats Granryd, GSMA Director General, stated, “This roadmap will now empower more MNOs to embrace AI in the knowledge that they are doing so responsibly and ethically.”

Telefónica CEO José María Álvarez-Pallete López added, “AI’s rapid rise shows its enormous potential, but also underlines the urgent need for responsible implementation. With this roadmap, the telecom sector is taking a bold step forward.”

As AI reshapes industries, telecoms have a unique opportunity to lead responsibly. The GSMA’s roadmap provides a clear, ethical path forward while ensuring sustainable growth and trust.

By embracing this unified framework, telecom providers can drive innovation while maintaining ethical integrity.
