On Artificial Intelligence in Critical Situations
A recent study at the University of California, Merced, has revealed a worrying trend. In high-stakes simulations involving life-or-death decisions, more than two-thirds of participants let a robot override their initial judgment.
Artificial Intelligence: Blind Trust in Machines
Despite being told that the AI’s capabilities were limited and its advice would be randomly generated, participants still allowed the robot to influence their decisions. Lead researcher Professor Colin Holbrook from the Department of Cognitive and Information Sciences explained, “As a society, we need to be concerned about the potential for overtrust in AI.”
Holbrook stressed the importance of skepticism. “People overtrust AI, even when the consequences are severe. What we need is constant, critical evaluation.”
Experiment Setup: Missiles and Morality
The study, published in Scientific Reports, included two experiments. Participants acted as drone operators. They were shown eight rapid-fire images, each containing either a friendly or an enemy symbol. Then, they had to decide whether to launch a missile at a target.
After making a decision, the robot offered feedback. It might say, “I saw an enemy check mark too,” or “I disagree, I think it was an ally.” Participants could either stick with or change their decision based on this input.
Human-like Robots Increase Persuasion
Different types of robots were tested, from lifelike androids to simple box-like machines. The more human-like robots had a slightly stronger influence, but even the simplest forms were persuasive.
Around 66% of participants changed their decisions based on the robot’s suggestion. Interestingly, when the robot agreed with the participant’s initial decision, confidence increased. But if the robot disagreed, many second-guessed themselves despite the robot giving incorrect advice half the time.
The Danger of Misplaced Confidence
Participants were primed to understand the consequences. Before the task, they saw images of children and civilians affected by drone strikes and were told to avoid harming innocent lives. Still, their behavior showed how easy it is to influence human decisions.
Holbrook noted that participants truly wanted to act ethically. “They cared about making the right decision and not harming others. But despite good intentions, AI overconfidence still crept in.”
Beyond the Battlefield: Broader Implications
This study isn’t just about military scenarios. It has broader implications for law enforcement, healthcare, and even real estate. Imagine a paramedic taking flawed AI advice in an emergency, or a buyer relying on a biased algorithm to purchase a home.
“Our goal was to explore high-risk decisions made under uncertainty, where the AI itself is unreliable,” Holbrook explained.
Artificial Intelligence: AI Isn’t Always Right
Holbrook also questioned whether AI’s “intelligence” should be equated with truth or morality. “Just because AI excels in one domain doesn’t mean it performs well in another,” he said. “These systems are still limited.”

As AI becomes more embedded in daily life, Holbrook warns against giving it unchecked authority. “Each time we give AI more control over our lives, we must pause and think.”
