User Perplexed When AI Unexpectedly Breaks Down in Tears
“The ghost in the machine, I guess.”
Surprising the Reddit user who shared it, an AI music generator appears to be crying like a person in an odd video.
A 24-second clip of the AI sounding like it’s crying was submitted by user u/BloodMossHunter to the r/SunoAI subreddit, which is devoted to the software that creates music by the same name. The footage appears not to have been part of the user’s request.
As other users noted, emotional-sounding outbursts and other creepy bits of audio appearing randomly at the ends of these AI-generated songs seem terrifyingly, perhaps, depending on your perspective to be a fairly common occurrence with the software.
In one comment, for instance, a user shared a Suno-generated song that they’d published on Spotify that at the end includes horrific echoey screams of “no!”.
Another was a song called “Ignorance Was Bliss” that u/SkyDemonAirPirates uploaded to Suno’s website. In it, a female voice with glitches asks the listener if they’re “still alive” before erupting into hysterical laughter.
“I suppose it’s the ghost in the machine,” another commenter said. “Yikes.”
Another spooky account came from u/SkyDemonAirPirates, who claimed to have created another recording with sporadic pleas of “Please help me.” The user says they reported the music to Suno, and Suno “nuked it,” indicating that the firm is aware of this recurrent issue with its software, at the very least.
One startlingly basic suggestion put out by users when debating the issue’s possible causes was that the AI might be attempting to emulate human-made “random outros” that contain conversation. When users enter prompt tags such as “emotional,” Suno can start sobbing.
In fact, Suno might have misinterpreted their final tag for the song, “psyche,” as u/BloodMossHunter pointed out.
We’ve been in touch with Suno to find out exactly what’s going on, but the user theory cited above does seem comparable to prior generative AI gaffes that demonstrate just how frightening this technology can be.
