Our Analysis: Both Teams’ Form
On Friday night, France and Portugal will play in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals. The venue for this semifinal match between two of Europe’s biggest teams is Hamburg.
In the round of 16, Slovenia forced Portugal to a penalty shootout after Cristiano Ronaldo missed the spot in normal time.
When Benjamin Sesko went through on goal late in the game, Diogo Costa prevented Pepe from blushing.
This competition has not seen Roberto Martinez’s team perform at its peak thus far. Martinez is still trying to find his attacking balance, and in the last third, Ronaldo appeared to be more of a liability than a help.
France has struggled with attacking as well. The lone player to score for Didier Deschamps’ squad was Kylian Mbappe, who did so in the last group game against Poland from the penalty spot. Les Bleus might have been eliminated in the round of sixteen if Belgium had shown greater poise.
Deschamps used a diamond against Belgium, and he might continue to keep with that stability while facing a strong Portugal squad. Mbappe hasn’t really lit up this tournament as he has in prior significant international contests, and he is still playing with a protective mask.
Portugal vs. France: Potential Starting Lineups
Portugal’s likely starting lineup is Costa; Vitinha, Palhinha; Silva, Fernandes, Leao; Ronaldo; Cancelo, Pepe, Dias, Mendes.
Ronaldo. France’s likely starting lineup is Thuram, Mbappe, Griezmann, Rabiot, Kante, Hernandez, Upamecano, and Saliba.
Les Bleus Cross The Boundary
Up until now, France’s performance in Euro 2024 has been dreadful. Their three goals have consisted of two own goals and one penalty kick. But Portugal’s play hasn’t improved much, and on Monday night they had a lot of trouble defeating a resolute Slovenian team.
Portugal defeated Czechia with a goal in extra time. Georgia defeated them, and Turkey gave them the game. The team’s collective effort was damaged by Cristiano Ronaldo’s egocentric performance in the round of 16. Portugal’s failure to remove Ronaldo from the pitch by Roberto Martinez could prove costly on Friday when they play a disciplined squad like France.
France has advanced to the final of three of the four major events since 2016. Portugal has not advanced past the quarterfinals since defeating France in the 2016 Euro final. We don’t have much faith in Portugal or Martinez at this point, but France is a good bet to finish the job.
• Spain versus France First wager: France will prevail.
Mbappe Discovers The Internet
Kylian Mbappe is not the only goal threat for France. Marcus Thuram has played 227 minutes and has scored 0.82 predicted goals. As a playmaker, Antoine Griezmann frequently plays in a deeper position. In Euro 2024, he has only had 2.5 shots per game thus far.
At Euro 2024, Mbappe has been averaging five shots per game, which is tied for the highest in the competition. The only player with more anticipated goals per 90 than Mbappe among those who have played more than 130 minutes is Kai Havertz.
Even if Mbappe’s fractured nose has interfered with his Euros, he has remained a consistent threat and is still France’s main outlet in the final third. We believe Mbappe will have enough goal-scoring possibilities to make a difference on Friday night because Portugal is anticipated to commit players forward.
• Spain versus France Bet 2: Mbappé Kylian France’s Defence to Suppress Portugal’s Attacks, Anytime Scorer
At Euro 2024, France has won three of their four games with a clean sheet.
Portugal has not scored in more than 210 minutes of play against Slovenia and Georgia.
Yes, Martinez’s team has fallen short of expectations, but they have also routinely wasted possession in the last third, in part due to the excessive number of assaults that go straight to Ronaldo.
Deschamps has achieved great success at this level by putting defence first.
In the match against Belgium, he decided to line up Adrien Rabiot, Aurelien Tchouameni, and N’Golo Kante in a midfield three. In four games, they have only let up 3.1 anticipated goals.
The way France has positioned themselves in Germany this summer does not bode well for the neutral team. Deschamps will try to contain a talented attacking side in Portugal in the hopes that Mbappe’s individual skill will allow him to steal a goal.
