Discrete GPU Power from Intel Enables
Next-Generation Automotive AI in the Vehicle Cockpit
It is anticipated that a new discrete GPU for the automotive industry would enhance in-car AI capabilities in 2025.
In a strategic move to offer automakers cutting-edge possibilities, Intel unveiled the Intel® ArcTM Graphics for Automotive, the company’s first discrete graphics processing unit (dGPU), during its AI Cockpit Innovation Experience event.
By the time the technology is commercially deployed in automobiles as early as 2025, automotive AI will have advanced and a new era of AI-driven cockpit experiences and enhanced customisation for automakers and drivers will have dawned.
Discrete Power, Expandable Architecture
With increasingly complex vehicle cockpits, there is a growing need for processing capability, which is why Intel entered the automotive discrete GPU market. Intel provides manufacturers with an open, flexible, and scalable platform solution that enables next-generation, high-fidelity experiences inside vehicles by introducing the Intel Arc graphics for Automotive to its current range of AI-enhanced software-defined vehicle (SDV) system-on-chips (SoCs).
Now, automakers are able to create a single car platform that works with several trim levels. While higher-end automobiles can benefit from the additional horsepower of the dGPU for even more luxury features, entry-level and mid-level models can make use of the Intel SDV SoC. Because software is fully interoperable with both discrete and integrated GPUs, this technique simplifies development.
Intel’s Vision: An Automotive Future Focused on Humans
Through intuitive and individualized interactions between the driver, passengers, and vehicle, in-car AI may personalize the trip and optimize the driving, as demonstrated by Intel’s AI Cockpit Experience.
“We’re excited to bring that expertise and our vast open AI ecosystem to the automotive industry,” said Jack Weast, vice president and general manager of Intel Automotive. “Intel’s strategy is to bring the power of AI into devices of every size and shape.” “China is a perfect testing ground for our next-generation technologies because of its advanced technological adoption and rapid electric vehicle development cycles.”
Feature-rich aspects of Intel’s AI cockpit:
• Next-Generation In-Vehicle Experiences: Intel-powered voice, camera and gesture recognition transform vehicles into immersive mobile hubs. Thundersoft’s demo showcased its new generation cockpit user interface (UI) that transforms vehicles into immersive mobile hubs supporting seven high-definition screens rendering 3D graphics and six-in vehicle cameras and interactive features. The new UI also showed its capacity to run high-demand AAA gaming titles simultaneously while running AI PC rich applications for smart mobile working.
• Deep Personalization: With powerful AI algorithms learning driver preferences, automakers can offer a highly personalized experience, adapting cockpit settings without voice commands.
Zhipu’s AI Car Assistant demonstrated the power of local large language models (LLMs) running on Intel’s compute platform. The demo highlighted the ability to execute complex vehicle control commands through natural language processing, answer vehicle-related questions accurately, and even engage in leisurely chat with users, providing a more interactive and enjoyable journey.
• Enhanced Productivity, Gaming and Entertainment: Automakers can turn the vehicle into a mobile office and entertainment hub with immersive 4K displays, multiscreen setups and advanced 3D interfaces.
• Intel’s AI PC Accelerator Program: Bringing together more than 100 independent software vendors (ISV) partners who have created 500-plus features and AI apps, the accelerator program immediately provides an unparalleled ecosystem that can be leveraged within the vehicle.
Building Blocks for The Future
Intel provides the building blocks for a future where driving is smarter, safer and more personalized than ever. The increased compute power offered by the dGPU opens a world of possibilities for automakers to differentiate their brands today. With the added confidence, they are ready to deliver a new level of AI-driven experiences to their customers tomorrow.
Intel aims to be the go-to partner for automakers. The company’s XPU strategy, robust AI accelerator software ecosystem and optimization capabilities provide a strong foundation for innovation in the automotive space.
