Hackers Take Control of Official OpenAI Twitter
Account to Promote Crypto Scheme Once More?
Hackers Breach OpenAI Twitter Account to Promote Fake Crypto Token
OpenAI’s official X (formerly Twitter) Newsroom account was hijacked on Monday night. The attackers used the verified handle to promote a fraudulent cryptocurrency named “$OPENAI”, a scam designed to trick users into connecting their wallets to a phishing site.
The Scam Unfolds
The compromised account, which has over 54,000 followers, tweeted:
“We’re very happy to announce $OPENAI: the token bridging the gap between AI and blockchain technology.”
It further claimed that all OpenAI users could claim a share of the token and gain access to future beta programs. The tweet linked to a phishing website posing as an official OpenAI domain.
Once there, users were asked to click a prominent “CLAIM $OPENAI” button. This triggered a wallet connection prompt, a common trick used by scammers to drain funds from users’ crypto wallets.
OpenAI’s Response
Let’s be clear: OpenAI has no association with any cryptocurrency tokens or blockchain projects.
According to Bloomberg, the company acknowledged the breach and confirmed that an internal investigation was underway. However, OpenAI hasn’t disclosed how many users may have fallen for the scam.
While the phishing website is still active, most browsers now warn users with a “suspected phishing” alert instead of displaying the original content.
Timeline and Account Activity
The hijacked Newsroom account was created in June but began posting regularly only this month. Since the scam tweet, the account has gone silent, with no clarifications or updates released by OpenAI through that channel.
That silence has left users confused, especially considering the growing number of similar attacks targeting high-profile accounts.
Recurring Cybersecurity Issues
Thankfully, OpenAI’s main account with over 3 million followers remained unaffected. Had it been compromised, the impact would likely have been far more severe.
Yet this incident marks the fifth time in just two years that an OpenAI-related account has been hacked. According to Cointelegraph, four of these breaches promoted the same fake $OPENAI token.
Notably, previous hacks targeted:
-
CTO Mira Murati’s account in June last year
-
Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki’s account was just months ago
In the most serious breach to date, an attacker gained access to a private forum where OpenAI employees discussed internal operations and company secrets.
Why This Matters
Repeated hacks raise serious concerns about OpenAI’s cybersecurity posture. Either the company is facing targeted, sophisticated attacks, or it needs to strengthen its digital defences significantly.
As OpenAI continues to grow in influence, these security lapses risk eroding public trust. It’s also a cautionary tale for users who interact with Web3-style content. Vigilance is no longer optional; it’s essential.
