Gaming laptop or the Asus ROG Ally X?
7/8/2024,
Which should you choose, an inexpensive gaming laptop or the Asus ROG Ally X?
The greatest portable gaming device for Windows is the Asus ROG Ally X, but it costs a hefty $800. That is affordable gaming laptop territory; for that same amount of money, you can get an HP Victus with an RTX 4050.
It’s hard to think on the warmest day of the year, but that made me pause and think. If you had eight hundred dollars, would you rather buy a cheap gaming laptop or a portable one? It seems weird to address this topic considering these are drastically different types of technology with radically different advantages and disadvantages.
That being said, a great deal of potential is wasted, thus it makes sense to pose this query. It boils down to five key factors that you should weigh carefully before making a choice.
1. Flexibility
This is unquestionably Asus’ best feature when it comes to gaming laptops and portables. This is effectively a larger version of the Nintendo Switch, making it more portable and easy to tuck into a rucksack for extended travels.
While most of the best laptop bags have an integrated sleeve, the Victus 15’s 5.5 pounds feels like it belongs in a powerlifting competition compared to the Ally X’s 1.5 pounds.
To put it, if portability is your top concern, you shouldn’t even take the Victus 15 into consideration when making judgements.
2. Copying
The Asus ROG Ally X’s exceptional performance is undeniable. The AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme is reasonably capable when it comes to PC gaming on a 7-inch handheld.
When it comes to PC gaming, however, nothing compares to the power of a dedicated GPU. Although the RTX 4050 may be Nvidia’s weakest card, it is still capable of some amazing feats. A large portion of this is due to DLSS 3.5, which generates frames using AI to greatly improve game performance.
Of course, there are other factors to take into account, such as the fact that a laptop’s Thermal Design Power (TDP) is inherently higher than a gaming handheld’s. And on the ROG Ally X, you can achieve those smooth frame rates with a little adjustment.
Forza Horizon 5, for example, used low defaults on the X to get that result, but it was running in 1080p Ultra with DLSS turned on.
In summary, though, if you have to have the most power for your money, buying a gaming laptop is the easiest choice.
3. Communicate with Users
Tony Polanco said as much in his video review of the ROG Ally X: Windows 11 is a terrible operating system for a tablet. With its proprietary Armoury Crate overlay, which gives it a fantastic console-like UI, Asus tries to get around that. In actuality, you have to use Windows itself a lot, which can quickly become tedious.
It’s clear that the main purpose of Microsoft’s operating system is desktop (or laptop) use, and a gaming laptop provides an even better experience. Furthermore, you may truly maximise not just your leisure time but also your work time. Sincerely, who would want to utilise Office 365 on a portable gaming device?
Ultimately, the choice here is between getting the most out of Windows on a larger screen or preferring an experience tailored for gaming on the go (and being willing to tolerate squishing around a small Windows 11 screen for a while to get your games).
4. Certain genres work better on a keyboard.
Playing all of your PC games on a handheld device is fantastic, and some game genres such as racing, fighting, platformers, third-person action, and turn-based role-playing are just better with a controller.
However, there’s no denying that games like first-person shooters, real-time strategy, construction, and more work best when you have a keyboard and mouse in front of you features that gaming laptops have over mobile devices. Thus, in all honesty, this boils down to personal preference based on the kinds of games you want to play.
Gaming laptops are renowned for their extended battery life, which may typically last till the conclusion of this sentence. Besides, the Asus ROG Ally X is far more powerful than the HP Victus, even if the Nvidia RTX 4050 is unquestionably the least power-hungry GPU on the market.
That means you simply need to think about how much time you might spend away from electrical outlets when making a buy. Selecting Ally X will not provide you with the best value if you frequently use one or both of the sockets. Regarding extended battery-free travel, however, the Asus portable truly excels.
