FT claims that the AI in the
next iPhone will be powered by Arm chips.
latest iPhone with its A18 chip, which is set to be unveiled at an event on Monday, has been developed using SoftBank (9984.T), opens new tab-owned Arm’s newest V9 chip design, the Financial Times newspaper reported on Saturday.
On September 9, Apple is scheduled to hold its fall event at its Cupertino, California headquarters. It is expected to introduce a number of new iPhone models along with updates for other devices and applications.
Apple signed a deal with Arm in September last year that “extends beyond 2040” in a boost for Arm for chip technology.
Arm had said in July that its V9 chip accounts for 50% of smartphone revenue.
Arm owns the intellectual property behind the computing architecture for most of the world’s smartphones, which it licenses to Apple and many others.
In order to create its own unique semiconductors for its iPhones, iPads, and Macs, Apple employs technology from Arm.
The two firms have a long history together; in 1990, before the advent of its “Newton” portable computer, which employed an Arm-based CPU chip in 1993, Apple was one of the first corporations to partner to start the company.
The Arm processor gained prominence in mobile phone chips due to its low power consumption, which prolongs battery life, even though the Newton failed.
