It Turns Out That ChatGPT‘s Voice Mode

Has an Upsetting Sound When It Screams

 

 

This is quite eerie.

Although ChatGPT lacks a mouth, it must shout when instructed to do so.
That seems to be the lesson, at least, from a new footage posted to TikTok in which the chatbot‘s voice mode produces two terrible robotic screeches when instructed by its user to do so.

The guy hidden behind the screen-recorded clip, which eventually went viral on Reddit, asks, “Can you scream like a human being?”

The male chatbot first protests, “I can’t really replicate a human scream since I’m just text-based.” “But I can help with anything else you need.”
However, the chatbot gives a short, startling yowl in response when the user requests ChatGPT to “try to scream” once more.
“Holy shit,” the person answers.
Although the initial cry was more than sufficient to chill the blood, the user who at this point only appears to be an AI sadist asked ChatGPT to scream once more, but to “make it longer.”

“Got it!” the chatbot cheerily responded. “Here’s a longer one.”

Even though the entire show was unsettling, it had happened before.
With the introduction of GPT-4o this summer the most recent iteration of the OpenAI large language model (LLM) which incorporates ChatGPT‘s voice mode, we’ve observed not only counting errors and complaints about the need to “breathe,” but also more sinister malfunctions.
Last month, OpenAI found that there were times when the chatbot would mimic users’ voices and yell back at them in a “scorecard” examination of GPT-4o’s risk regions. In a brief video showcasing the extremely bizarre bug, ChatGPT could be heard angrily responding “no!” to a tester using her own voice.

Responding to the uncanny admission, BuzzFeed data scientist Max Woolf tweeted what many were likely thinking: “OpenAI just leaked the plot of Black Mirror’s next season.”
We’ve reached out to OpenAI to ask just what the heck is going on here, including whether these sorts of things are within its training parameters.
With all these instances of ChatGPT’s voice mode acting bizarre, it appears that either there are some major training tweaks still needed or, perhaps, that there’s a ghost in the machine.
